This is a photograph that I took of the winter sun low in the sky through the window. It has an hazy effect and had a melancholy feel about it. However, what I love about it is that it serves as a framework for the poem I wrote. I wrote it for those who are hurting and missing a loved one at this time of year, this one is for YOU!

Veil of Tears

by Mary Mikawoz

As days change into nights
And nights into days
We see the passage of time
Moments slipping by unnoticed

We trudge on in snow-laden streets
With cold in our feet, face and hands
But not in our hearts…

We remember those who have passed on
From one realm to another
We rejoice in their memories
And of the substantial love they gave us

We can choose to stand in a veil of tears
Wiping the currents of moisture from our eyes
Or simply initiate a wealth of gratitude
For their Past Presence in our lives!

With my art, I am often in a zen-type of mood and with my photography, I feel as if I am inspired by God or the Universe to capture these moments in time.

Beloved Tiger

Mikawoz Beloved Tiger

Beloved Tiger

I took this photograph of a tiger at a zoo. He is looking off into the distance.

I wrote this poem to go with the image. This is how I felt.

Beloved Tiger
by Mary Mikawoz (2020)

Off in a Distance
You Dream
Of Bygone Days
And Solitudes

Yet you Continue to Roam
In Your Mind
Of Distant Lands
Of Chasing Game
And Wildlife
Of Embracing Life

Your Path and Destiny has diverged
Once Upon a Time
To be Captive Here
For our Amusement
In this Human Zoo

Sorry for our Indulgences
Sorry for the captivity
One Day You Will be Free Again!

Softy Snowing

Softly Snowing

by Mary Mikawoz (2019)

It is starting to snow – softly and ever so eloquently
It rejoices and falls to the Earth
Displaying non-judgment
And good discretion

It is an act of nature
Ever so poetic
And brilliant in its execution

The snowflake
of itself is divine
Different each one
Designed by God

Wonderfully quiet and serene
The pleasantness of calm
In its absolute honour it descends to the ground.

Thistle Me This!

Poem and Photography By Mary Mikawoz

“Thistle me this!

Thistle me that!

The firmer you place us together

The harder it is for you to tear us apart!!!”

I was inspired to write this poem because of the inspiration that George D. Mestral received in developing Velcro from the concept of thistles in how they work and how they cling to you by observing how burdock and bur seeds attached themselves to his dog’s furs and to his clothing.  He examined them under a microscope discovering all the little hooks and then put it into action.

This Swiss electrical engineer thought of the idea in 1941 and invented the idea of Vclcro in 1948.  Did you also know that Velcro fasteners made of Teflon loops, polyester hooks, and glass backing are used in Space Stations in outer space?

From  a personal point of view, my family went to Poland when I was 6 years old. That summer we visited a relative’s farm.  I remember running through some normal fields and then realizing that I had beautiful little flowers stuck all over and on my skirt when my sister pointed them out to me.  I thought they were pretty until I tried to take them off and they stuck firmly to my clothing and pierced my fingers.  Then I thought they were nasty but now I just see them for the beauty that they are in this photograph that I took.
