Mary Mikawoz Biography

MARY MIKAWOZ

Winnipeg-born Mary Mikawoz has loved architecture, painting, and illustrating her own stories since kindergarten. Her father was an artist-photographer; a high-school teacher influenced her to experiment with abstraction. Mary has moved around Canada a lot, taking a Political Science degree, later qualifying as a new media specialist and earning a teaching degree. She has had jobs as social worker, federal civil servant, staff development officer, and teacher. Mary has put this varied experience to good use running her own company, Majestic Productions, which offers graphic design, photography and photo restoration, and website design. Mary says she’s friendly and personable. “I like beauty and powerful art. Art is everything to me,” she adds.

Currently, Mary produces abstract art in coloured India ink with nib pens, or in acrylic on canvas. Colourful swirling curves and sharp angles predominate, implying time, movement, and change. She allows her favourite music to influence her as she works. She also does photography, especially telephoto images of nature and wildlife subjects, many of which she has patiently stalked near her cottage close to Little Deer on Lake Winnipeg. Uniquely, she digitally combines her several genres, deepening the meaning and mood of her photos by incorporating abstract drawings into the composition. “In these pieces, the photo shows a static moment in time,” Mary explains, “while the addition of the abstract drawing reflects another, more dynamic and enigmatic aspect of the same subject.”

Universe – Part 1

This is an abstract picture of the universe. It deals with textured acrylic paint and the idea of the universe being connected. I am influenced in my abstract art by Jack Bush (a Canadian Artist) and Lawren Harris of the Canadian Group of Seven.

Lunar Moon

I had a great time taking photos of this moon.  Being present at night time, the skies are black except for the lunar moon which is full in breadth and appearance.  There is a beige tinge to the revolving rock around the Earth.

Did you know that the Farmer’s Almanac has different names for the moon depending upon which month occurs?  They are as follows;

January: “Wolf Moon” also “Old Moon”

February: “Snow Moon”, also “Hunger Moon”

March: “Worm Moon”, “Crow Moon”, “Sap Moon”, “Lenten Moon”

April: “Seed Moon”, “Pink Moon”, “Sprouting Grass Moon”, “Egg Moon” “Fish Moon”

May: “Milk Moon”, “Flower Moon”, “Corn Planting Moon”

June: “Mead Moon”, “Strawberry Moon,” “”Rose Moon”, “Thunder Moon”

July: “Hay Moon”, “Buck Moon”, “Thunder Moon”

August: “Corn Moon”, “Sturgeon Moon”, “Red Moon”, “Green Corn Moon”, “Grain Moon”

September: “Harvest Moon”, “Full Corn Moon”,

October: “Hunter’s Moon”, “Blood Moon”/”Sanguine Moon”

November: “Beaver Moon”, “Frosty Moon”

December: “Oak Moon”, “Cold Moon”, “Long Nights Moon”

Hawaiian Sunset

This is a photo I took in Waikiki, Hawaii while on a sunset cruise.  Hawaii is interesting because the highs and lows in temperature for the day and night are very similar within a few degrees each day most of the year.  It was really a “Groundhog Day” out there.  Plus, I don’t think I have seen a quicker sunset in my life.  It was there one minute and shortly afterwards, it was down.  I chose this image today because of the cold weather we have been having so I can always dream and remember.

Please note a couple of sailboats on the horizon in the center image and the plane just over the land on the right hand side of the photo.

ET Face in Tree

I like to look at things and possibly see things that might be special.  This is a photo of a tree with moss on it.  The part that is interesting to me is that there seems to be a face, an ET face, protruding from the tree.  I see the forehead, eyes, nose, mouth and throat.  Can you see it?

Wheels, Gears and Cogs

Here is a rusted out piece of machinery consisting of Wheels, Gears and Cogs.  I am not sure exactly what this type of machinery is but the intricacies of the wheels, gears and cogs and how they are working together is amazing.  I find this image fascinating even if the machinery is rusted out and does not work anymore.

Alcatraz Island

I took this photo of this famous island from a ferry boat ride that was going by the sight.  The island is known as “The Rock” and was home to a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison and a federal prison.  Native Americans call it an “evil island” and believe it to be cursed.  A number of movies have been made on the Island.  Tours are available to it.  You can see a huge barge on the right of the photo and in front of the bridge.

Toppled Wire Fence

I really don’t have much to say about this photo other than I like the simplicity of it.  The strain of use over time has made this wire fence topple over at the post’s base.  I always find it interesting how you get not only white snow but blue hues when you photograph the shadows on snow.

Baby Merganser

I had a hard time capturing this photo and some others similar to it because ducks are mobile, constantly moving by swimming, ducking into the water and/or flying.  This is a baby merganser just developing its changing colours and feathers.  This is one of many species of birds that live near Lake Winnipeg which is the 10th largest freshwater lake in the world. The mergansers are fish-eating ducks.
