Vimy Ridge is a famous place and monument in France. It is dedicated to Canadians as they were able to take ground that was kept by the Germans in World War I. It was thought to be impenetrable and unbeatable and yet the Canadians did it. It was part of the Battle of Arras in the Pas-de-Calais Region of France.
This monument is 30 meters high and was designed by Walter Seymour Allward. It was unveiled in 1936 by King Edward the VIII. It was restored in 2007. I took this image of Vimy Ridge a number of years ago. My husband, David Atwell, and I have been to Vimy Ridge many times. My husband has been there about six times as Lieutenant Colonel of the Fort Garry Horse Regiment, and I have been there three times. My son now serves with the Fort Garry Horse Regiment as a Captain and he has likewise been to Vimy Ridge. When you are there, even though you are in France, you are actually standing on Canadian soil.
The last such visit was on a multi-nation bus tour and unfortunately the tour guide did not indicate how important this monument was to the war effort and particularly to Canadians but as a consequence I was able to take pictures were no one else was on the monument at the time.
This battle was the first time that there was a Canadian Corp under Canadian leadership and they took the ridge despite two other larger attempts that failed. Because of this, the world took notice and Canada was given attention as a nation of people and given a separate identity from the United Kingdom.
According to Wikipedia, “The Battle of Vimy Ridge was part of the Battle of Arras, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, during the First World War.”

On this day, Dominion Day or Canada Day, July 1, 1916, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment faced the German army at Beaumont-Hamel on the first day of the Battle of Somme, inflicting 90 percent casualties.
According to Wikipedia, there were a number of memorials erected by the Newfoundland government after the war. “ Four were erected in France at Beaumont-Hamel, Gueudecourt, Masnières, and Monchy-le-Preux and the fifth is Courtri/Kortrijk in Belgium.” A sixth monument stands in Bowring Park in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The memorials are all centrally identical featuring the emblem of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment being the caribou standing atop of Newfoundland granite appearing to roar in the direction of the enemy. This photograph was taken at Beaumont-Hamel in France. We walked around the paths.

I really like the photograph and added a stained glass effect to it. It is not an ordinary flower but a special one found at Hotel Beatus in Cambrai, France where I found it outside the rooms in the adjoining patios. Philippe Gorczynski found and made a museum around a World War I British tank, Deborah, the Iron Lady, near Flesquieres.
