Two Tiny Turtles
These two turtles are not the smallest I have ever seen. They were actually approximately 6 to 9 inches in length but relative to tortoises, they are tiny. They were climbing all over each other. I have made this image into black and white because I like seeing the textures and designs of the turtle shells. I also like the way the light plays in the picture. I took this image in Mexico.
According to Wikipedia, “Turtles are reptiles of the order Testudines. They are characterized by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs that acts as a shield. “Turtle” may refer to the order as a whole or to fresh-water and sea-dwelling Testudines. Testudines includes both extant and extinct species.”

Turtle and Fishes
This is a photograph of a turtle swimming amongst fishes. What is interesting to me is that although it is in water the top of its shell is completely dry! What a great swimmer that it can be in water and bask in the sunlight and still not get wet!
I took the photograph in Freeport, Bahamas.

Old Timers
There are actually two tortoises. There is another one behind the front one. This picture was taken at the Honolulu Zoo in Hawaii.
According to the SoftSchools.com, “Turtles and tortoises are closely related. They are both reptiles from the same family (Testudines or Chelonian). The main difference between the two is that turtle is the name given to water-dwellers and tortoise is the name given to land-dwellers.”
Further they say, “Their life span is longer than that of the turtle with an average of 80-150 years and a maximum of 188 years.”

Turtle Amongst Fish

This turtle is happily swimming amongst the fishes. I like the appearance of a sparkle of light off of its mouth.
