Thorns

This was part of the same hike through the deserts around Mesa, Arizona. I have made the photograph into a black and white one because I like the way the thorns are more so emphasized. I also like the way the leaves of the cacti look like paddles. I believe these are called Prickly Pear Cacti.

Spikes

I took this photograph while hiking in and around Mesa, Arizona. The cactus is full of spikes and prickly thorns. Although it is full of spikes, there is beauty in this nature too.

According to Wikipedia, “In plant morphology, thorns, spines, and prickles, and in general spinose structures, are hard, rigid extensions or modifications of leaves, roots, stems or buds with sharp, stiff ends, and generally serve the same function: physically deterring animals from eating the plant material.”

Young And Old

I love the contrast between the old rose on the right-hand side who has lived her life and is dying now. The beauty on the right is just beginning her life. Roses are just gorgeous even if they come with prickly thorns. It is the way of life – negative and positive making up the whole – isn’t it?
