Golden Boy

Golden Boy

Here is a black and white photograph with all but the Golden Boy who is, of course, in gold. He is atop the Manitoba Legislature in the capital city of Winnipeg in the province of Manitoba, Canada.

According the Manitoba Government website, he represents the Roman God Mercury or the Greek God Hermes. He represents eternal youth and the spirit of enterprise. He is a symbol of prosperity. He was installed on the dome on November 21, 1919.

The Sphinx

Way, way on top of the eastern side of the Manitoba Legislature, is the Sphinx. It is something you can easily miss if you are not looking carefully enough.

According to Wikipedia, “In Greek tradition, the sphinx has the head of a woman, the haunches of a lion, and the wings of a bird. She is mythicized as treacherous and merciless, and will kill and eat those who cannot answer her riddle. This deadly version of a sphinx appears in the myth and drama of Oedipus.”

In the Manitoba Legislature, the Sphinx has a male’s head instead of a female’s head which makes sense as the Egyptian sphinx usually shows as a man or androsphinx. Further to that in Wikipedia, “In addition, the Egyptian sphinx was viewed as benevolent but having a ferocious strength similar to the malevolent Greek version. Both were thought of as guardians and often flank the entrances to temples.”

I have illustrated it with a red hue for the seriousness of missing out on the riddle.

Red and Green

Mikawoz Red and Green

Red And Green

There is a red and green snake amongst red and green leaves of a plant. I like the looping nature of the snake and how it is on top of each other.

According to Wikipedia, “Healing and snakes were associated in ancient Greek myth with Aesculapius, whose snake-familiars would crawl across the bodies of sick people asleep at night in his shrines and lick them back to health.”

I think of the Coronavirus and think of the symbol for medicine featuring snakes.
