Book: “Freedom From Emotional Eating” by Paul McKenna
Book Review by Mary Mikawoz
Paul McKenna is a successful author in Great Britain. He has been described as a modern-day guru with a mix of Dr. Phil and Tony Robbins. He offers a number of techniques for dealing with emotional eating and emotional overeating.
He sees the industry of diet-clubs and diets in general with the billion-dollar industry as a farce. The industry know that its substitute products do not work and that dieting does not work and yet they continue to sell their wares. Over 70% of people who go on diets regain the lost weight and often more.
The new “normal” is not a good normal. Over one-third of British people and one-half of Americans are clinically obese. This is absurd that in western countries with overwhelming amounts of food, that there are people starving themselves.
Paul McKenna says there is his Golden Rule of Four. First, you should only eat when you are truly hungry. Second, you should eat what you want. Third, however, you should eat consciously. And fourth, you should stop when you are full. These golden rules have been written in about in his previous books: “I Can Make You Thin” in 2005 and “Hypnotic Gastric Band” in 2012. Both these books have helped many thousands of people to lose weight. They provide the basic outline that this book also includes but more.
Paul McKenna says that the book is only half of the products he offers. The second important part is the audio and video downloads associated with the Hay House website. You have access to his Hypnotic Trance, to “Listen While You Eat,” the Emotional Balancing Technique, Stop Self-Sabotage Technique, and the Havening Technique. He offers some hypnosis to deal with the emotional aspects of overeating. A person usually eats to numb their negative pain and doesn’t want to deal with their negative emotion such as sadness, anger, grief, fear or depression.
McKenna’s method deals also with associated reasons for self-sabotage when the real reason for the original action was for self-protection or self-preservation. It the past, they may have decided that a certain emotion could not be dealt with because it was too scary and needed to be protected by another method of dealing with the suffering and pain and so they compensated by overeating or emotionally eating.
Finally, there are success tracker sheets which keeps you on target by asking simple questions and also whether you have used certain techniques that day. Eventually, a person gets a handle on their emotions, even the negative ones. Gradually people lose weight and this method is more long-lasting because it is not a fad or passing fancy.
