Rainbow Over Falls

The sun reflecting off of the sparkling water has created a beautiful rainbow amidst the Sunwapta Falls.

According to Wikipedia, “Sunwapta Falls is a pair of waterfalls of the Sunwapta River located in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. The falls are accessible via a 600 metres access road off the Icefields Parkway, which connects Jasper and Banff National Parks. The falls have a drop of about 18.5 metres.”

Whitemouth River Falls

I love the contrast of the water in this photo.  The snow and ice are white, serene and still.  Underneath, you find flowing and open water but it is placid and calm.  It looks blue but it clear water.  Just below, you see the water not only trickle but really come alive as it falls over rocks.  From passive to active, this water flows and changes down the river path.

Due to the many rapids along this river’s path, it is apparently very popular with canoe enthusiasts.  Aside from the Seven Sisters, there are also the towns of River Hills, Elma, Whitemouth, and Hadashville located along the river in Manitoba, Canada.

Seven Sisters Falls Damn

Because Canada is a younger country, weather records show that this is the latest spring on record in Winnipeg’s history in 141 years.  As such, this picture is interesting because it is a month after Spring has officially started and yet the Seven Sisters Damn on the Winnipeg River is still very solidly frozen with ice and snow.  Seven Sisters was originally known as Seven Portages.

Further upstream on the Whitemouth Falls, the water is starting to open.  The River system flows north to Lake Winnipeg which is the 10^th largest fresh-water lake in the world.  There are 10 major watershed draining areas that contribute to this lake from Alberta on the west, to Ontario on the East and North Dakota on the south.  It flows northward to the Hudson Bay and the Arctic Ocean.  This generation station is responsible for many hydro lines directly into Winnipeg to provide electrical power and service to this community.
