I Am Surrounded – Photography by Mary Mikawoz – Click image to see the bigger picture.
Yup, you see me. I am the window looking outwards or perhaps, you are looking inside of me. I am surrounded by ivy growing all around me. To the North, South, East and West of my centre, are wonderful plants growing up the brick walls.
With my art, I am often in a zen-type of mood and with my photography, I feel as if I am inspired by God or the Universe to capture these moments in time.

Westminster Abbey – Photography by Mary Mikawoz – Click image to see the entire picture.
This is a photograph of the Westminster Abbey in London, England in the United Kingdom.
According to Wikipedia, “The Abbey is the burial site of more than 3,300 persons, usually of prominence in British history: at least 16 monarchs, 8 Prime Ministers, poets laureate, actors, scientists, military leaders, and the Unknown Warrior. As such, Westminster Abbey is sometimes described as “Britain’sValhalla”, after the iconic hall of the chosen heroes in Norse mythology”

Powerful Determination – Photography by Mary Mikawoz – Click image to see the bigger picture.
Now this is a photograph of powerful determination if I did see one. The green plant is thriving and continuing upwards and around to grow. Nothing is in its path is getting in its way as it weaves and turns to make a new route around windows, balconies and corners.
Up, up, up the walls of the building, the ivy grows in dogged persistence of its goal of surviving and in a state of being extant. We, as human beings, are often the same as we pursue our goals in life.
The ivy clings to life on the walls but it is smart enough to use tools and techniques at its disposal to grow.

You Light Me Up – Photography by Mary Mikawoz – Click image to see entire photograph.
We were just wondering around London, England and I saw this beautiful combination of arched windows with a balcony of pink and white flowers just in front of a light post. I believe we were around the corner from Westminster Abbey of the Church of England which is home to coronations and weddings of the Royal family.
We love to walk around and see what beauty we can encounter in all the most unexpected places here in Canada and around the world when we are able to travel. I enjoy the company of my husband and my son as we are able to have travelled in the past and they definitely are true to the saying “You Light Me Up.”

I took this image of Vimy Ridge a number of years ago. My husband, David Atwell, and I have been to Vimy Ridge many times. My husband has been there about six times as Lieutenant Colonel of the Fort Garry Horse Regiment, and I have been there three times. My son now serves with the Fort Garry Horse Regiment as a Captain and he has likewise been to Vimy Ridge. When you are there, even though you are in France, you are actually standing on Canadian soil.
The last such visit was on a multi-nation bus tour and unfortunately the tour guide did not indicate how important this monument was to the war effort and particularly to Canadians but as a consequence I was able to take pictures were no one else was on the monument at the time.
This battle was the first time that there was a Canadian Corp under Canadian leadership and they took the ridge despite two other larger attempts that failed. Because of this, the world took notice and Canada was given attention as a nation of people and given a separate identity from the United Kingdom.
According to Wikipedia, “The Battle of Vimy Ridge was part of the Battle of Arras, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, during the First World War.”

In the quaint city of Amiens, there is a location near the Somme River which is home to a number of outdoor patios and restaurants in Northern France. We had a wonderful 3 to 5 course meal with accompanying beverages over a period of 2 to 3 hours. The French know how to “Dine.” I took this photograph of one of the bridges. I really like the way they turn a brick bridge into something beautiful with flowers on the sides. Can you see the swan in the water near the center of the photo?

While travelling in France, we stayed with friends in the French countryside just outside of Paris. It was a beautiful cottage home. I enjoyed wandering the grounds exploring the gardens and photographing this water pomp or Pompe à Eau.
I have put a sepia colour to indicate that it is from an older time and generation.
