Book: “Daily Self-Worth Journal for Women: A 60-Day Guide to Self-Improvement, Kris Jobson, Books Go Social, 2022

Book Review by Mary Mikawoz

I think it is important to start off with who Kris Jobson is. On LinkedIn, he is described as, “Creator, Artistic Director, Director, Choreographer, Producer, Writer, Dancer, Model, Actor, and Speaker.” He is definitely a creative whom I can relate to. I understand creatives because we tend to go inwards to find our source of inspiration. It is important to figure out who you are in order to expose yourself to the outside world in creativity.

I think it is important to note, as he does, that this is not to be used as medical treatment. There are people qualified to help you with trauma and many other issues or problem areas of concern.

I am reviewing both journal books for men and women because other than the cover, the orientation for both books are the same.

I feel as if much of this work is based on Kris’s internal dialogue based on counselling sessions. This is purely conjecture but his knowledge seems to have come from somewhere or perhaps years of studying and researching.

The areas he covers from self-love, self-confidence, to letting go and balance are all important key areas of life. I found the book repetitive because you were doing similar exercises for the different areas from writing out certain phrases, to breathing exercises, repeating affirmations and going inwards. I felt as if these would be assignments that a counsellor would give you after each session.

For a journal, there are some good areas to address individually and in a quiet place and space. I think you have to work the program like AA, NA, or OA to get to the root of the problems.

Having reviewed the book, I give the books both 3.5 out of 5.0 for his concern in wanting to help people and providing a framework for reflection. If I were the publisher, I would have reoriented the journal to cover more areas of concern and with an index or appendix that people could go to for the repetitive sections like the personal declaration sections and other continuing sections.

Horseshoe Driftwood

As I was walking along the sandy beach, I saw this combination of driftwood that collected itself in the shape of a horseshoe. It is unique in design but is reflecting the path and flow of water that moved and created this delicate artwork. Mother Nature is the best creative artist of them all!

With my art, I am often in a zen-type of mood and with my photography, I feel as if I am inspired by God or the Universe to capture these moments in time.

I have recently invested in a computer drawing tablet and so I am taking my creativity to the next level with technology. I have created with the same kind of flow that I would do with my old-fashion nibbed ink pen or coloured pens or pencils. It is vibrant. I have to admit, it took me a long time to deal with actually creating something. I was fearful of it and do not know all the hurdles I need to climb over quite yet. 

This is my creation called “Doing It” because it involves taking micro and baby steps in the right direction. It is about encouragement and “Going for it.” It is time for my new future!

Goal Mapping Book Review

Book: “Goal Mapping: A Practical Guide to Turning Your Dreams into Reality,” Brian Mayne, Watkins Publishing, 2020

I read this book awhile back when the Corona Virus was taking root in North America and we started lockdown in many areas of the world. It was a good book and I am sorry I have not reviewed it sooner but felt I needed to give it some more thought.

I am encouraged by the personal story of Brian Mayne and the things he had to do to overcome his educational problems and learning difficulties. That itself, is an inspiration.

Brian puts a number of good and appropriate quotes throughout the book, however, I read it on a Kindle and so there was just a jarring of quotes in a haphazard format that intruded on the flow of the actual text of the book. I do not know if the physical book is formatted differently. It is do-able though. You just need to read and remember where you were at and what the last point was.

If I were to glean the main points of the book are, I would have to say that it is important to use your left and right sides of your brain. Brian Mayne has developed a way to write words from the logical, left side of the brain and then incorporate images or drawings by using the right side or creative side of the brain. It is a way of reinforcing goals in a way that makes it more impactful. In this regard, the author provides some drawings to explain his point, however, I would have appreciated more drawings with accompanying explanations of what they meant to illustrate and really bring home the point of how the goal mapping system works. It would have added so much more to the book.

I give this book a 3.5 out of 5 for effort and for his explanations. It is a good starting point for someone who would like to reinforce their vision with words and images.

Lightning

This started off as an abstract drawing with coloured gel pens. I saw the strokes as lightning in the sky. I have added special effects to make the artwork more interesting. I like the forcefulness of the lightning in the sky during a storm and thunder.

Birthday

This is an abstract drawing I did up in ink. It represents my birthday today. I see a heart in it which represents love. I see lungs which represents the breath of life or chi or prana and energy. I have candles or lights to represent happiness, joy and celebration of life. There is flow and design to the art piece. I usually create to the sound of music playing while I free flow my creative work to the inspirational music.

Streaming Light

I took this image on the South Shore Beaches of Freeport, Bahamas. The sun was streaming in through the clouds and was absolutely beautiful. It is as if God is shining down on the Earth.
