Winnipeg Skyline – Photography by Mary Mikawoz – Click on image or link to see the bigger picture.
I was on a plane recently and was able to sit on the correct side of the airplane to capture this picture of the Winnipeg Skyline during daylight hours. The buildings may not be as momentous as that found in the architectural skyline of Chicago, New York or Paris but it is significant as the downtown core has all the bigger buildings spreading out to the wonderful wide and flat expanse of the prairies. I like the flow of the river as it bends and curves through the city.
According to Wikipedia, “Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba in Canada. It is centred on the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, near the longitudinal centre of North America. As of 2021, Winnipeg had a city population of 749,607 and a metropolitan population of 834,678, making it the sixth-largest city, and eighth-largest metropolitan area in Canada.”
With my art, I am often in a zen-type of mood and with my photography, I feel as if I am inspired by God or the Universe to capture these moments in time.

I started off drawing with India Ink and nib pens on paper. I was in a zen state of mood. The shapes, rhythms and swirls just flowed. I later took the drawing and put into the computer where I added colours.
The colours represent my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Winnipeg is the closest city to the geographical centre of North America. From North to South and West to East, it is in the middle of the continent. It is the heartbeat of the land mass. There are three sets of representations – colours of the City of Winnipeg, the Fort Garry Horse Regiment of the Winnie the Bear fame and also the CFL Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

This is Fire Hall Number 15 located on Osborne Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I like the way the clouds are dramatic and so interesting drawing your eye back into the fire hall as a centrepiece. I thought it was more effective as a black and white photograph.
According to the City of Winnipeg website, “This 1913-built stone and brick fire hall is one of more than a dozen built by the City of Winnipeg based on a set of standard plans developed in 1904…The solid brick Osborne Street Fire Hall’s rests on a rubble-stone foundation and its design includes rusticated stone cladding on the ground floor, a two-storey front section with an oriel window on the second floor and a one-storey stable at the rear.”
Further, “Scottish born and trained brothers A.R. and W.N. Melville were responsible for the 1904 standard plans and for overseeing the construction of this hall. They were an influential partnership that began in the City around 1900 and lasted until just before World War I. They were responsible for the design of 10 fire halls and many fine local buildings.”

This is the Leg – pronounced as “The Ledge” or the Legislature. It is the Manitoba Legislature found in the city of Winnipeg in the province of Manitoba in the country of Canada.
This is the back side of the legislature facing from the Red River. It showcases a wonderful fountain and the beautiful architectural structure of this building.
According to the Manitoba government website, “The Legislative Assembly is an independent entity, separate from the Government of Manitoba. The 57 Members of the Assembly are elected in single-member constituencies to represent the people of Manitoba.”
Further to that, “Manitoba’s Legislative Building is reputed to be one of the most impressive public buildings in North America.”

Forgotten Root Cellar – Photography by Mary Mikawoz
Forgotten Root Cellar
When I was younger, we used to come back from being at the beach along the country roads back to the city. We would stop at the farmers who would sell their produce at their properties. They had all their food in burlap bags and would have them stored in root cellars.
This is a photograph of an old root cellar because they were built near the ground and went down deep into the soil to keep the vegetables cold and preserved. This picture brings back good memories.

This is my representation of my home town Winnipeg. Many home town instituttions are Blue and Gold from the City of Winnipeg to the Fort Garry Horse Regiment to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It is made with India ink both brush strokes and nib pens.
This is a photo of the famous Catholic Church called Saints Paul and Peter Church in the North Beach area of San Francisco. You get the spires as a quick image as I passed along one of the famous bus tours around the city. I love the trolley lines finding them interesting how they intersect and work.
I remember being younger and enjoying the electrical buses that use to run up and down Corydon Avenue in Winnipeg. They often lost their footing on the cable as they came around the bend and so I would enjoy sitting there watching them putting the cable back on the line. I miss those electrical buses and meanwhile they were good for the environment but we replaced them in the name of technological advancement.

I think one of the coolest things about Sausalito, California is that it is only 13 feet above sea level. Can’t do much better than that. The population of this quaint little city with colourful buildings is only about 7000 people and is located at the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge. I found the restaurants in the area to be spectacular with great seafood, of course.
