Painted Horse

Painted Horse

This is a photograph I took of a beautiful Painted Horse in its beautiful surroundings. I like his stance as it is really stoic.

It reminds me of the song from America called “A Horse with No Name” and written by Dewey Bunnell in the early 1970s.

“I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert, you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la, la-la-la, la-la-la, la, la
La, la, la, la-la-la, la-la-la, la, la”

According to Wikipedia, “The American Paint Horse (Equus caballus) is a breed of horse that combines both the conformational characteristics of a western stock horse with a pinto spotting pattern of white and dark coat colors.”

“Look Ma, I can fly!”

This is an image of a pelican flying near a dock on Lake Winnipeg.  I like the way he or she delicately takes off from the rocks to fly and seems to be saying “Look Ma, I can fly!”  The other pelican is oblivious and looks like he or she is saying, “Boy, I don’t care.  Stop showing off my brother/sister (pick one).  We can all do that!  Who really cares!  I am going to ignore you.”

Their large beak and large throat pouch is used for catching fish and not carrying babies as fairy tales would have us believe.  Too bad!  They range in many areas and fossil evidence show that they date back to 30 million years ago.  They are gregarious birds who hunt cooperatively and breed colonially.  Pelicans are found on inland lakes and costal waters.

According to Wikipedia, “They have suffered from habitat destruction, disturbance and environmental pollution, and three species are of conservation concern. They also have a long history of cultural significance in mythology, and in Christian and heraldic iconography.”

Seagull Sticks

Pretty much anywhere you go when you are near water; you will find Seagulls or Gulls. I read that these birds breed on every continent and even on the fringes of Antarctica and the North Arctic which I think is amazing.  I think this speaks to their hardiness and ability to adapt to various climates around the world.  I do realize they are mainly scavengers and so this explains their ability to sustain themselves.  Apparently, they can live a long time and often mate for life.  Their offspring are precocial which means they are able to be mobile upon hatching out of their eggs, among a few other things.  This photo that I took was on a lake which had these large pieces of wood sticking out of the water which I believe is being used to moor boats to near the shoreline.  It looks as if the Seagulls have taken over.  Enjoy!
