Birds on my Back

Mikawoz Birds on my Back

Birds on my Back

This is a photograph I took of a Bison with 3 little birds on his back. I love the way nature works together to live in harmony. It was taken in the buffalo paddock.

Interesting to note from Quora, “Many birds like to hang around large grazing animals because these animals disturb insects living in the grass, as Bison or Cows move around grazing there’s a good chance of easy pickings for birds that know this. What better place to watch for lunch than on the back of the animal that is stirring the pot!”

Trois Aigles

Mikawoz Trois Aigles

Trois Aigles

These are three eagles flying high up in the sky. Actually, only two were originally in the photograph but I decided to add the third one as they were taken the same day within minutes of each other. They are spectacular raptors. All three are Bald Eagles but the centre one is actually an immature Bald Eagle which surprisingly looks like a Golden Eagle.

According to http://www.pure-spirit.com, “Eagle conveys the powers and messages of the spirit; it is man’s connection to the divine because it flies higher than any other bird. The eagle brings the message of renewed life because it is associated with the east winds – the direction of spring, dawn and rebirth.”

Canada Geese on the Bend

Mikawoz Canada Geese on the Bend

Canada Geese on the Bend

The Icelandic River weaves and bends its way from Arborg all the way back to Lake Winnipeg. There were “zillions” of Canada Geese migrating and staying near their water supply. This is a black and white image that still captures the magnitude of many birds despite not being in colour.

Fishing Boat

Fishing Boat

This is a fishing boat in the Vancouver Harbour in British Columbia near the Lion’s Gate Bridge in Stanley Park. It is being followed by a flock of birds because of all the fish they are catching.

I have put some nice blue effects on the image to make it more interesting than the gray scale image that it originally was.

In Between

In Between

The Canada Goose is between two tree trunks. He is heading towards the water. In the background, you can see another goose rising up out of the green algae water.

It was taken at St. Vital Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and as the geese are back now, it will be a common sight again.

Bird Haven

Mikawoz Bird Haven

Bird Haven

This cactus is quite old and has become home to many birds as evidenced by all the holes in it. The dramatic streaks in the sky are beautiful too. This was taken in the deserts near Mesa, Arizona, USA.

According to Wikipedia, “The saguaro is a tree-like cactus species in the monotypic genus Carnegiea, which can grow to be over 40 feet tall…The saguaro blossom is the state wildflower of Arizona.”

Woe is Me!

Mikawoz Woe is Me

Woe Is Me

This is actually a white-handed gibbon. I made the image black and white and then added a brownish hue to it. He looks a bit sullen to me and so that it is why I called it “Woe is Me!”

According to National Geographic, “White-handed gibbons are small tailless apes with soft, thick fur. They live in trees and li ke to stay high up in the canopy of trees. Their very long arms allow them to swing effortlessly among the tree branches. They can also change direction in a split second, and can catch birds in midair and eat them after landing.”

Golden Eye

According to Wikipedia, “The golden eagle is one of the best-known birds of prey in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the most widely distributed species of eagle. Like all eagles, it belongs to the family Accipitridae. These birds are dark brown, with lighter golden-brown plumage on their napes.”

Hide and Seek

Hide and Seek

Hide And Seek

Yes, these pink flamingos are playing “hide and seek.” It is nice to see that animals and birds play games just like humans. Ok, I am kidding. It does look like one could be counting with the help of the duck and the others are hiding. Seriously though, they are amazing how they can crank their necks like that. Plus, did you know they process their foods in their mouths upside-down? Interesting! Love their rose colouring against the dark background.

Gannet Cliffs

Gannet Cliffs

Gannet Cliffs

This is a location near St. Mary’s Cove in Newfoundland where we were hiking. The gannets migrate here every year. They are large black and white birds – the biggest seabird in the North Atlantic. Hundreds of thousands of Gannets can be found on the cliffs. From afar, it looks as if the cliffs are spotted white in colour. Gannets can dive-bomb from 30 meters in the air to catch their fish. They can go up to 100 kilometers per hour when they are dive-bombing into the ocean. It is amazing to sit in the cliffs and watch them come and go
