Snow Geese

Actually, this photographic shot is pretty rare. Although I live in Manitoba, it is difficult to find Snow Geese in our neck of the woods. If you look at a migratory map, you will see that they go quite far up north. I caught this image as they were migrating south in the fall time.

According to Wikipedia, “Snow geese breed north of the timberline in Greenland, Canada, Alaska, and the northeastern tip of Siberia…”

I hope you like this image.

As for me, I love beauty in all its forms. With my art, I am often in a zen-type of mood and feel as if I am “in the flow.” With my photography, I feel as if I am inspired by God or the Universe to capture these moments in time. I feel as if I am zinged when I capture that special shot and it is meant to be.

Feather and Seaweed

Thanks for enjoying, liking, commenting, purchasing and sharing!

Feather and Seaweed – Photography by Mary Mikawoz – Click on image or link to see the bigger picture.

I love seeing and taking photographs of things people normally would not notice and would just walk right on over or right on by. I was amused by this white feather that popped itself on the sandy shoreline along the lake. The bird who lost its feather had no idea that it was creating art amongst the green seaweed swirling by the water’s edge.

With my art, I am often in a zen-type of mood and with my photography, I feel as if I am inspired by God or the Universe to capture these moments in time.

Craven

Craven

This is what my husband and I, affectionately, call these birds: “Cravens.” It is actually a combination between the words, Crows and Ravens. They are so similar in appearance that we combine the names into one name, “Cravens” There is a difference between the two though.

According to the Audubon Website, “These two species, Common Ravens and American Crows, overlap widely throughout North America, and they look quite similar. But with a bit of practice, you can tell them apart.”

Further they write, “You probably know that ravens are larger, the size of a Red-tailed Hawk. Ravens often travel in pairs, while crows are seen in larger groups.”

As well, “Listen closely to the birds’ calls. Crows give a cawing sound. But ravens produce a lower croaking sound…While crows caw and purr, ravens croak and scream bloody murder.”

In flight, “Ravens ride the thermals and soar, whereas crows do more flapping.”

I took this photograph in the Interlake area where the Cravens were hanging out near some Bald Eagles. I was able to get a pretty good close-up of the Craven. In some cultures, crows and ravens are seen as magical messengers from the Divine.

Piercing Brown Eyes

Piercing Brown Eyes

I absolutely love it when I come across eagles and especially Bald Eagles. They are such a joy to watch soaring across the skies and landing on tree tops every so elegantly.

They are absolutely magnificent creatures with such amazing abilities to fly up amongst the drafts of air and wind.

This eagle was well camouflaged in amongst the tree branches but I found its piercing brown eyes checking me out at a distance and me at him. It is no wonder that they are symbols for so many nations and organizations, as they are powerful and kings of their own domain soaring ever so higher into the upper realms of the atmosphere.

White as Snow

White as Snow

This parrot is standing stoically on a branch amidst the greenery. He is “white as snow.” He seems to be happy and content. I like the way he is so elegant and has such beautiful plumage.

The photograph was taken at Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver, British Columbia. According to the Vancouver Parks and Recreation website, “More than 120 free-flying exotic birds, 500 exotic plants and flowers thrive within its temperature-controlled environment.”

Canada Goose Fountain

Canada Goose Fountain

I like the Canada Geese playing and frolicking in front of the fountain. I have made it black and white to make it more interesting. This picture was taken only a few weeks ago but the fountain has been already closed down due to dropping temperatures and because of the recent snow already.

There were still Canada geese at the Duck Pond in Assiniboine Park yesterday when I went for my walk. I do not know why the few stragglers have not flown south for the winter. They should be going soon.

The Sphinx

The Sphinx

Way, way on top of the eastern side of the Manitoba Legislature, is the Sphinx. It is something you can easily miss if you are not looking carefully enough.

According to Wikipedia, “In Greek tradition, the sphinx has the head of a woman, the haunches of a lion, and the wings of a bird. She is mythicized as treacherous and merciless, and will kill and eat those who cannot answer her riddle. This deadly version of a sphinx appears in the myth and drama of Oedipus.”

In the Manitoba Legislature, the Sphinx has a male’s head instead of a female’s head which makes sense as the Egyptian sphinx usually shows as a man or androsphinx. Further to that in Wikipedia, “In addition, the Egyptian sphinx was viewed as benevolent but having a ferocious strength similar to the malevolent Greek version. Both were thought of as guardians and often flank the entrances to temples.”

I have illustrated it with a red hue for the seriousness of missing out on the riddle.

Pelicano

Pelicano

I took the original photograph of the Pelicano and then created an artwork from it. I love the pelicans that I see on Lake Winnipeg and water areas. My husband and I have always affectionately called these birds, Pelicanos, not realizing that that is the Spanish word for them.

According to the What’s Your Sign website, “Pelicans are symbols of love, sacrifice and motherhood. This has to do with legends about pelicans giving their own blood and life in order to save their offspring. Pelicans remind us how self-sacrifice is often required in order to protect who and what we love.”

Grackle

Grackle

This is a female Great-Tailed Grackle found in Arizona. Females are brown whereas the males are black. I love they way the leaves softly and gently frame the bird. She is enjoying the shade.

According to the Audubon Field Guide, Great-Tailed Grackles are omnivores and their diet is varied including “many insects, also spiders, millipedes, snails, crayfish, tadpoles, small fish, lizards, eggs and nestlings of other birds, and sometimes adult birds. Also eats a wide variety of seeds, waste grain, berries, fruit, and nuts.”

Pink Parrot

Pink Parrot

This is a photograph of a pink parrot that I took at the Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver, British Columbia. I like the way she looks. I hope you do too.

I added some purple to the backdrop for special effects and a sense of cohesion with the hue levels.
