Assiniboine Park Pavilion

This is an autumn picture of the Pavilion and Duck Pond at Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The Canada Geese are on their migratory route south at this time of year. “Canada geese fly in a distinctive V-shaped flight formation, with an altitude of 1 km (3,000 feet) for migration flight. The maximum flight ceiling of Canada geese is unknown, but they have been reported at 9 km (29,000 feet).”(Wikipedia)

Freedom from Emotional Eating

Emotional Eating

Book: “Freedom From Emotional Eating” by Paul McKenna

Book Review by Mary Mikawoz

Paul McKenna is a successful author in Great Britain. He has been described as a modern-day guru with a mix of Dr. Phil and Tony Robbins. He offers a number of techniques for dealing with emotional eating and emotional overeating.

He sees the industry of diet-clubs and diets in general with the billion-dollar industry as a farce. The industry know that its substitute products do not work and that dieting does not work and yet they continue to sell their wares. Over 70% of people who go on diets regain the lost weight and often more.

The new “normal” is not a good normal. Over one-third of British people and one-half of Americans are clinically obese. This is absurd that in western countries with overwhelming amounts of food, that there are people starving themselves.

Paul McKenna says there is his Golden Rule of Four. First, you should only eat when you are truly hungry. Second, you should eat what you want. Third, however, you should eat consciously. And fourth, you should stop when you are full. These golden rules have been written in about in his previous books: “I Can Make You Thin” in 2005 and “Hypnotic Gastric Band” in 2012. Both these books have helped many thousands of people to lose weight. They provide the basic outline that this book also includes but more.

Paul McKenna says that the book is only half of the products he offers. The second important part is the audio and video downloads associated with the Hay House website. You have access to his Hypnotic Trance, to “Listen While You Eat,” the Emotional Balancing Technique, Stop Self-Sabotage Technique, and the Havening Technique. He offers some hypnosis to deal with the emotional aspects of overeating. A person usually eats to numb their negative pain and doesn’t want to deal with their negative emotion such as sadness, anger, grief, fear or depression.

McKenna’s method deals also with associated reasons for self-sabotage when the real reason for the original action was for self-protection or self-preservation. It the past, they may have decided that a certain emotion could not be dealt with because it was too scary and needed to be protected by another method of dealing with the suffering and pain and so they compensated by overeating or emotionally eating.

Finally, there are success tracker sheets which keeps you on target by asking simple questions and also whether you have used certain techniques that day. Eventually, a person gets a handle on their emotions, even the negative ones. Gradually people lose weight and this method is more long-lasting because it is not a fad or passing fancy.

The Aha! Factor

aha factor

Book: “The Aha! Factor: The Intuitive Guide to Getting What You Desire and Deserve” by Mariana M. Cooper

Book Review by Mary Mikawoz

I feel as if the author Mariana M. Cooper or Mari has been a long lost friend of mine. We have so much in common. Her journey into the spiritual realm started back in the 1980s as did mine. She has many insights that I agree with. Some I already knew but others are written out in such a way that they make more sense. As well, many of her spiritual habits are ones that I have been doing.

In the beginning of the book, Mari explains the Bull’s-eye of Energy which consists of three rings. The first is your aura which extends from your body for 50 feet or 15 meters. The second ring is the soul which extends 500 feet or 150 meters from your body in all directions. It is vast and impacts much more than you realize. Finally, the last ring is the spirit which extends indefinitely and is part of the entire universe. It is the interconnectedness of everything physical and non-physical and has no limits. Through focussed thought you are engaging the Bull’s-eye of Energy. Until you use it, is remains neutral and not in use.

From there there is the energy grid or Energetic Communication System (ECS) which is a massive web of light just like a cosmic spider web which interconnects all things. This reminds me of the ever-present Internet and its capacity to be worldwide. The ECS is where we manifest, magnetize, actualize and attract our desires and intentions. It works in conjunction with your five senses of touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight. The ECS consists of your intention, your intuition, your telepathic ability, your channeling ability and your capacity to receive and perceive both physical and energetic information.

The Aha! Factor is the ability to take information and make it understandable in a context from many sources. The Aha! Factor uses intuition a great deal and to understand its modern context, one only has to look towards Oprah when she gets the insight of having a conversation with someone or something finally makes sense in a new way. Your Aha! Factor uses the four clairs – clairvoyance, clairsentience, claircognizance and clairaudience. Your intuition uses signs, symbols and synchronicity. Your Infinite Self interprets all information because it uses our entire being from the energetic part of ourselves to our physical part of our life.

There is so much information and good understanding in this book that it is impossible to go over each aspect in this review. It is best to get a copy of the book and read it for yourself. I highly recommend this book for people who are aware of being spiritual or are into a new age/way of thinking of enlightenment.

Basic Black

Basic Black - Cathie BlackBook: “Basic Black – The Essential Guide for Getting Ahead at Work (and in Life)” by Cathie Black

Book Review by Mary Mikawoz

Cathie Black has done amazing things as a woman and person. From working in advertising for small magazines and for Ms. Magazine to being president and the publisher for USA Today. She has sat on the board of Coca-Cola and IBM. She has been influential as a powerful business women. She has been recognized seven times among the “50 Most Powerful Women in American Business.”

It goes without saying that she knows a lot of people. She drops names easily but it is because of her hard work at her position that she is able to do so. She was influential in working with Gloria Steinem at Ms magazine and also with the O magazine for Oprah.

She details her life events through various stages of development. She climbed the corporate ladder in the magazine and the newspaper industries. I have worked in various industries and so I found many of her points of insight were common sense. Some of her opinions show-cased her personal bias such as needing and being contacted with the exact new spelling of her name that she decided to take on as a teenager. Many of the leadership tips are sensible and make sense for anyone who has dealt with people. I found one of her last chapters the most interesting and that was the one dealing with “Black and White: Advice from All Over.”

The book reads like an extended magazine fashioned with various inset topic headings and also the use of colour inside the book and subheadings on the title page. This only makes sense based on the industry she has worked in for a very long period of time.

I would recommend this book for people interested in advertising, marketing, newspapers, magazines and interested in climbing the corporate ladder. Finally remember to “…create a healthy, happy 360 degree life for yourself” by “…trusting your instincts, adapting to change (and) pursuing your passion.”

Until Today

Until Today Book

“Until Today” By Iyanla Vanzant

Book: “Until Today: Daily Devotional for Spiritual Growth and Peace of Mind” by Iyanla Vanzant

Book Review by Mary Mikawoz

This book will take you a year to read; at least, it should. It is daily devotional book dated each day for an entire year. I read the book at a number of sittings because I did not know if I could wait a year to read all the amazing insights that Iyanla has to offer.

Iyanla’s insights are so incredible and in depth. Her wisdom is of sage advice. I enjoyed reading her book and think it would be very good to focus on one aspect each day. Each month has a different focus. From January to December, the devotee is supposed to focus on different elements such as the following: life, love, awareness, acknowledgment, acceptance, forgiveness, understanding, faith, trust, worth, service and peace.

It is difficult to discuss everything Iyanla goes over so I will keep my comments to a minimum by quoting a couple of days in the book. On July 30, the beginning of the day starts with “I will gain more understanding when I realize…there is a place called home where I am always welcome.” There are four paragraphs that follow expounding further on this concept. It ends off the page with a focal point. In this case, it reads, “Today I am devoted to finding my way back home!”

Other example pages have poems or quotes or sayings in it. One of my favourites is found on December 29 where the following is given.

“You are here:

To gain character as you lose ego

To gain integrity as you lose dishonesty

To gain strength as you lose fear

To gain compassion as you lose disappointment

To gain discipline as you lose willfulness

To gain equality as you lose separation

To gain appreciation as you lose resentment

To gain enthusiasm as you lose hostility

To gain tenderness as you lose rigidity

To gain boldness as you lose bitterness

To gain generosity as you lose selfishness

To gain optimism as you lose inadequacy

To gain excitement as you lose embarrassment

To gain gratitude as you lose greed

To gain love as you lose ignorance.”

The book in my estimation is fantastic. Iyanla puts down in writing many of her inner peaceful secrets and understandings of God. This a a great spiritual book that could be read first thing in the morning each and every day for years to come with new insights being found all the time. I highly recommend this book.

This includes two photographs of a Rhodesian Ridgeback or the African lion hound. In one, he is sunning himself, gazing into the sun and in the other; he is galloping and frolicking in the ocean. I feel as if he is dreaming of playing in the waters.
