Gathering Place

Gathering Place – Photography by Mary Mikawoz – Click on image or link to see the bigger picture.

I took this photograph awhile ago but it is happening again as it usually does in autumn. The Canadian Geese are flying south for the winter from having been up north. I know we have many, many geese in Winnipeg but these ones are actually in Arborg, Manitoba. There is this quaint little river that runs by the town and it winds along its path. Every year, the geese gather in huge multitudes. It is a glorious display.

With my art, I am often in a zen-type of mood and with my photography, I feel as if I am inspired by God or the Universe to capture these moments in time.

Piercing Brown Eyes

Piercing Brown Eyes

I absolutely love it when I come across eagles and especially Bald Eagles. They are such a joy to watch soaring across the skies and landing on tree tops every so elegantly.

They are absolutely magnificent creatures with such amazing abilities to fly up amongst the drafts of air and wind.

This eagle was well camouflaged in amongst the tree branches but I found its piercing brown eyes checking me out at a distance and me at him. It is no wonder that they are symbols for so many nations and organizations, as they are powerful and kings of their own domain soaring ever so higher into the upper realms of the atmosphere.

White as Snow

White as Snow

This parrot is standing stoically on a branch amidst the greenery. He is “white as snow.” He seems to be happy and content. I like the way he is so elegant and has such beautiful plumage.

The photograph was taken at Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver, British Columbia. According to the Vancouver Parks and Recreation website, “More than 120 free-flying exotic birds, 500 exotic plants and flowers thrive within its temperature-controlled environment.”

Pelicano

Pelicano

I took the original photograph of the Pelicano and then created an artwork from it. I love the pelicans that I see on Lake Winnipeg and water areas. My husband and I have always affectionately called these birds, Pelicanos, not realizing that that is the Spanish word for them.

According to the What’s Your Sign website, “Pelicans are symbols of love, sacrifice and motherhood. This has to do with legends about pelicans giving their own blood and life in order to save their offspring. Pelicans remind us how self-sacrifice is often required in order to protect who and what we love.”

Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpecker

This is what we commonly refer to as the Red-Headed Pileated Woodpecker or if you are old enough as “Woody Woodpecker.”

According to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, “At an average 18″ in length, the pileated is the largest woodpecker in Canada. These colossal birds, with their striking red crest and resemblance to prehistoric pterodactyls in flight, are thought to be the inspiration for the once popular cartoon Woody the Woodpecker. As Woody had his loud laugh, pileated woodpeckers also make noise to match their size. Their drumming, reminiscent of construction machinery, can be heard up to a kilometre away.”

Grackle

Grackle

This is a female Great-Tailed Grackle found in Arizona. Females are brown whereas the males are black. I love they way the leaves softly and gently frame the bird. She is enjoying the shade.

According to the Audubon Field Guide, Great-Tailed Grackles are omnivores and their diet is varied including “many insects, also spiders, millipedes, snails, crayfish, tadpoles, small fish, lizards, eggs and nestlings of other birds, and sometimes adult birds. Also eats a wide variety of seeds, waste grain, berries, fruit, and nuts.”

Hawk on Post

Mikawoz Hawk on Post

Hawk on Post

Whether you are going north, south, east or west in the prairies, you will see an hawk on a post of a farmer’s field. It is actually a hard picture to get because as you slow down in your car, the hawk takes off.

Interesting information from Wikipedia include, “Hawks, like most birds, are tetrachromats having four types of colour receptors in the eye. These give hawks the ability to perceive not only the visible range but also ultraviolet light. Other adaptations allow for the detection of polarized light or magnetic fields.”

Trois Aigles

Mikawoz Trois Aigles

Trois Aigles

These are three eagles flying high up in the sky. Actually, only two were originally in the photograph but I decided to add the third one as they were taken the same day within minutes of each other. They are spectacular raptors. All three are Bald Eagles but the centre one is actually an immature Bald Eagle which surprisingly looks like a Golden Eagle.

According to http://www.pure-spirit.com, “Eagle conveys the powers and messages of the spirit; it is man’s connection to the divine because it flies higher than any other bird. The eagle brings the message of renewed life because it is associated with the east winds – the direction of spring, dawn and rebirth.”

Scarlet Macaw

Scarlet Macaw

This photograph was taken at the Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver, British Columbia. You can see the unique patterning of the skylights in the background.

According to Wikipedia, “The scarlet macaw (Ara macao) is a large red, yellow, and blue Central and South American parrot, a member of a large group of Neotropical parrots called macaws. It is native to humid evergreen forests of tropical Central and South America.”

In Between

Mikawoz In Between

In Between

The Canada Goose is between two tree trunks. He is heading towards the water. In the background, you can see another goose rising up out of the green algae water.

It was taken at St. Vital Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and as the geese are back now, it will be a common sight again.
