Hawk on Post

Hawk on Post

Whether you are going north, south, east or west in the prairies, you will see an hawk on a post of a farmer’s field. It is actually a hard picture to get because as you slow down in your car, the hawk takes off.

Interesting information from Wikipedia include, “Hawks, like most birds, are tetrachromats having four types of colour receptors in the eye. These give hawks the ability to perceive not only the visible range but also ultraviolet light. Other adaptations allow for the detection of polarized light or magnetic fields.”

Accoutrement

This was a boat ride in Waterton Lakes National Parks in Southern Alberta. We travelled across the lakes from one side to the other crossing from Canada into the United States. I enjoyed taking photographs of the lifebuoy and other boat accoutrements.

I like the composition of the photograph I took with the red lantern based the way it is. It is a memory of by-gone day when lanterns were the main source of light in homes.

Solemness

This is a photograph I took while hiking at Astotin Lake in Elk Island National Park. The water was just soft and gently moving creating a feeling of solemness. I like the way the two benches are standing in a solitary positions but are alone without occupants.

Wild Rose of Alberta

Wild Rose of Alberta

Here is a beautiful, pink rose bush that represents the symbol of Alberta. I took the photograph in Elk Island National Park near Edmonton.

According to the Indigenous Teaching and Learning Gardens website, the Indigenous used the wild rose as follows: “Used medicinally to treat bee stings, colds, blindness and diarrhea. The rose has also been used in ceremonial medicine. Rosehip rinds were eaten.”

Rainbow Over Falls

Rainbow Over Falls

The sun reflecting off of the sparkling water has created a beautiful rainbow amidst the Sunwapta Falls.

According to Wikipedia, “Sunwapta Falls is a pair of waterfalls of the Sunwapta River located in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. The falls are accessible via a 600 metres access road off the Icefields Parkway, which connects Jasper and Banff National Parks. The falls have a drop of about 18.5 metres.”

Alberta Legislature Building

The Alberta Legislature is found in Edmonton. According to Wikipedia, “The Alberta Legislature Building was built between 1907 and 1913 in the Beaux Arts style at the same time as the much larger Saskatchewan and Manitoba legislative buildings by architects Allan Merrick Jeffers and Richard Blakey. Montreal architect Percy Nobbs helped with the final revisions.”

Forest of Birch Trees

Forest of Birch Trees

These are beautiful birch trees found in the forests of Elk Island Provincial Park near Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

According to Wikipedia, “Birches have spiritual importance in several religions, both modern and historical. In Celtic cultures, the birch symbolizes growth, renewal, stability, initiation, and adaptability because it is highly adaptive and able to sustain harsh conditions with casual indifference.”

Recaptured Life

Recaptured Life

The house is abandoned and you can see from the open window right through the house to the open door.

It is weathered and worn while nature in its greenery has started to grow back and recapture life in the prairies. In fact, I think clover has started to grow in the recesses of the wood.

Here are itty bitty icicles hanging on for their life on a boulder. This was taken on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. I like the various textures and the colour of the water and rock.
