Empowerment
This is a photograph of the Five Women including Nellie McClung who fought for the Person’s case and was the first province in Canada to extend voting rights to women on January 28, 1916. This fight amongst other women’s fights to vote around the world has led to women like Kamala Harris to become the first African-American, first Asian-American and first woman Vice-President of the United States. This photograph is to remind and honour those women who have fought for equal rights and who have led the way. Kim Campbell was the first female national leader by becoming the 19th Prime Minister of Canada on June 25, 1983.
According to the Manitoba Historical Society: “This bronze sculpture of the “Famous Five”—the five women whose challenge to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1929 resulted in women being legally recognized as persons under the British North America Act—was unveiled at a ceremony on 18 June 2010. Created by local sculptor Helen Granger Young at an estimated cost of $750,000 on behalf of the Nellie McClung Foundation, the monument is one of three on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislative Building focusing on women, , the others being monuments of Queen Victoria (on the north grounds) and Queen Elizabeth II (on the east grounds near Government House).”
From Left to Right: Henrietta Muir Edwards, Emily Murphy, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, and Nellie McClung
I have put on pink/purple hue to represent female power and empowerment.
