Old Homestead

I took this photograph of this old homestead. It has dramatic clouds in the sky which I really like. It has a tower silo on the left-hand side and two grain bins on the right-hand side. These are all used for bulk storage of grain which is a very big crop in the prairies.

I have made the image black and white as I like the overall effect.

Pelicano

Pelicano

I took the original photograph of the Pelicano and then created an artwork from it. I love the pelicans that I see on Lake Winnipeg and water areas. My husband and I have always affectionately called these birds, Pelicanos, not realizing that that is the Spanish word for them.

According to the What’s Your Sign website, “Pelicans are symbols of love, sacrifice and motherhood. This has to do with legends about pelicans giving their own blood and life in order to save their offspring. Pelicans remind us how self-sacrifice is often required in order to protect who and what we love.”

Cute One

Cute One

I took this photograph of this prairie dog in Edmonton even though they can be found throughout the prairie regions of Canada.

According to Wikipedia, “Prairie dogs (genus Cynomys) are herbivorous burrowing rodents native to the grasslands of North America. The five species are: black-tailed, white-tailed, Gunnison’s, Utah, and Mexican prairie dogs. They are a type of ground squirrel, found in North America.”

I remember that in one of my very first cross-country races as a teenager was at Omand’s Creek and Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, I stepped into a gopher hole and twisted my ankle while running. I went over my ankle but I kept going and finished the race. I would have avoided the hole but there were so many runners around me and we were bunched up through a narrow pathway that I could not see it coming up all of a sudden. Live and learn.

They are cute despite creating big holes and tunnels in the ground which can be dangerous.

Wobbly Fence and Old Barn

Wobbly Fence and Old Barn

I took this photograph near Île-des-Chênes, just south-east of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I like the way the fence is jaggedly put together and is kind of wobbly. I have made the image black and white to highlight the old barn against the field, trees and cloudy sky.

According to the Ritchot website, “Île-des-Chênes is located along the twinned Highway 59, meaning that commutes are a breeze. This francophone town was settled in the mid-nineteenth century in an area prolific with oak trees, and that’s where the town got its name, which translates to Oak Island.”

String of Lights

This is a bridge in Tempe, Arizona with a string of white lights on it. It crosses the waterway and connects both sides of the Salt River.

According to Wikipedia, “Tempe Town Lake is an artificial perennial reservoir located just north of Tempe Butte at the confluence of the intermittent Salt River and the ephemeral Indian Bend Wash in Tempe, Arizona. The reservoir receives much of its water from the Colorado River via the Central Arizona Project.”

Boss Man

This is a profile photograph of the head of a male dominant bison of the herd. He is absolutely huge just like a offensive or defensive lineman in football. He is strong and majestic.

His head is large and his horns are powerful just in case he needs them.

According to the US Department of the Interioir, “Male bison (called bulls) weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall, while females (called cows) weigh up to 1,000 pounds and reach a height of 4-5 feet.”

Blocked

I took this photograph of an old, derelict house that has had its window blocked by overgrown trees and plants. I have always been amazed how quickly nature overtakes what man has built once it has been abandoned. It is a testament to the strength, power and resiliency of Mother Earth.

Manitoba Bison

Manitoba Bison

This is a photograph I took of the master bison of the herd. He was definitely the largest and the most dominant. He led the other bison on a rampage towards me as they thought I had food for them.

This image reminds me of the University of Manitoba Bison symbol and logo. Even though I am alma mater to several Universities and Colleges across Canada, my biggest connection is as alumna to the University of Manitoba.

I love this bison because he is majestic, strong and perfect.

Fall Equinox

Fall Equinox

This is a panoramic photograph I took this morning at the shoreline of Lake Winnipeg at Little Deer at 8:30 am when it was the right time for the change of seasons Central Standards Time (CST) for this area. This is approximately 2 hours north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

I love the beautiful golden hue and tone of the sun with its juxtaposition against the blue of the water and sky.

I like how your eye leads you into the water of the photo with the trees framing the image nicely. It also invites you in and makes you want to go swimming but it is getting too cold for that already.

Brown Eyes

Brown Eyes

This is a photograph of a red fox with beautiful brown eyes and gorgeous red fur coat. I took the photo in the Interlake area which is north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was not seemingly too scared of us. He walked along and even opened his mouth which I think is interesting and I wonder why. I know that cats open their mouths off to use their sense of smell – Jacobson’s organ.

According to National Geographic, the Vulpes Vulpes or “Red foxes are solitary hunters who feed on rodents, rabbits, birds, and other small game—but their diet can be as flexible as their home habitat. Foxes will eat fruit and vegetables, fish, frogs, and even worms. If living among humans, foxes will opportunistically dine on garbage and pet food.”
