Basic Black - Cathie BlackBook: “Basic Black – The Essential Guide for Getting Ahead at Work (and in Life)” by Cathie Black

Book Review by Mary Mikawoz

Cathie Black has done amazing things as a woman and person. From working in advertising for small magazines and for Ms. Magazine to being president and the publisher for USA Today. She has sat on the board of Coca-Cola and IBM. She has been influential as a powerful business women. She has been recognized seven times among the “50 Most Powerful Women in American Business.”

It goes without saying that she knows a lot of people. She drops names easily but it is because of her hard work at her position that she is able to do so. She was influential in working with Gloria Steinem at Ms magazine and also with the O magazine for Oprah.

She details her life events through various stages of development. She climbed the corporate ladder in the magazine and the newspaper industries. I have worked in various industries and so I found many of her points of insight were common sense. Some of her opinions show-cased her personal bias such as needing and being contacted with the exact new spelling of her name that she decided to take on as a teenager. Many of the leadership tips are sensible and make sense for anyone who has dealt with people. I found one of her last chapters the most interesting and that was the one dealing with “Black and White: Advice from All Over.”

The book reads like an extended magazine fashioned with various inset topic headings and also the use of colour inside the book and subheadings on the title page. This only makes sense based on the industry she has worked in for a very long period of time.

I would recommend this book for people interested in advertising, marketing, newspapers, magazines and interested in climbing the corporate ladder. Finally remember to “…create a healthy, happy 360 degree life for yourself” by “…trusting your instincts, adapting to change (and) pursuing your passion.”
