Still (2006)
By Mary Mikawoz

Giggling as if many years have not passed by
Amusing in the things that made them
    Laugh out loud
Without regard to who was listening

Laugh lines becoming permanent etches
    On the faces

Finding each other  rapturous
Despite the learned knowing
    Of Troubled Lives and Years
Still opening up the heart to dreams and
Enjoyments they once had

Alba

Dedicated to Jack Elliott (2006)

border reivers
r u n across the wall
o v e r the fallen leaves
by dawn and dusk
w e t in the mists
of glistening tears

he fights on
she cries
I die

they mourn for me
my pale eyes
receding from life
my skin damp and c o o l
as I lay my final rest
in the lily-of-the-valley
Alba lives on

Background Notes:

Alba is the region between England and Scotland where the boarder reivers lived.  From the late 13th century to the end of the 16th century, the border reivers were people who traditionally fought for whichever side paid the most and changed allegiances often.
